Hot apple cider donuts, orchards and a little train around a pond. Go on a weekday or early to beat the crowds.

Day 1: Orchard hop

Follow the Hwy 50 signs to exits 48, 49 or 54 rather than Google Maps. One first-timer found exit 54 the faster way into Rainbow Orchards and skipped the backed-up line off the highway. Bring cash for parking. Sacramento Bee via AOL
In October, the eastbound left-turn lanes on Hwy 50 have been closed, so you have to use exits 48, 49A, 54 or 57. Weekdays in October, or September and November, are much calmer. CBS Sacramento
Hidden Star has a 'Kids Town' of toddler-size houses in the back. O'Halloran's sells apples in low bins toddlers can reach and has a big pumpkin patch. Larsen's lawn across the street is good for running around. Berkeley Parents Network
El Dorado Orchards is mainly worth it for the little train, which loops around two ponds and through a tunnel. Its fruit selection is small. The train doesn't run when the tracks are wet. Inspired Imperfection

October is the busiest month. Growers suggest September, November, or October weekdays. Entry and parking at the ranches are free.
On October weekends, Apple Hill suggests using Hwy 50 exits 54 or 57, since exits 48 and 49A get jammed.
Rainbow Orchards (2569 Larsen Dr) is open Sep 5 to Dec 6. Hours are 9 to 5 on fall weekends and 9 to 4 on weekdays through Oct 31.
Bring cash for small stands, and layers for cool mornings.
Veterans Day (Wed Nov 11): High Hill Ranch (daily 9–5) and Rainbow Orchards (weekdays 10–4) are open. El Dorado Orchards and its mini train run weekends only and close for the season by mid-November.
