Tips from parents
- From April to November you can walk out to see the elephant seals on your own. Pick up the free permit at the entrance station between 8:30 and 3:30.
- The round trip is about 3 to 4 miles over sand dunes and takes roughly 2.5 to 3 hours. It suits kids who can walk that far. Allow time to finish before the preserve closes.
- Strollers, food and pets are not allowed in the preserve, so use a carrier for little ones. Bring water and wear layers and closed-toe shoes.
- From Dec 15 to Mar 31 the only way to see the seals is a docent-led walk, which you book ahead on ReserveCalifornia.
